I work with a gal who went down to the shore this past weekend. She went in the ocean up only to her knees and before long, was swept by a wave. She said she tried to stand up and regain her balance, but was only getting further and furthur from the beach. The lifegurads noticed and were getting the row boat ready, but luckily she swims often and was able to beat the surf by swimming diagonally toward the beach. NEVER SWIM DIRECTLY STRAIGHT TO THE BEACH in a rip tide. Scary, very scary.

Lifeguards also say not to fight the tide. If you wait it out and let it take you out a little farther, the rip tide will go away and you will be able to swim back. The problem arises when you are trying to fight the rip tide, are not successful, and then too tired to swim back to shore when the tide diminishes.
