For anyone who has to go through this, has recently been though this or needs to go through this eventually; I like to share my experience:

First off, the doctors told me it's not uncommon for these benign tumors to appear in patients 20 or so years out who've had radiation therapy as part of their treatment. In most cases, they are a long term effect of the radiation.

That being said, here's my experience:
I had 2 meningiomas taken out in 2008. My understanding is they form anywhere in the top layer of the head, the "menges". And as far as I know, meningiomas are benign and don't grow roots, so they can easily be scooped out - no problem.

The operation
I had two operations (b/c one was in back and one was in front). Both operations were about about 2 hours. Obviously, after making the initial incision in my skin, rolling the skin back to where the tumor was, they just scooped these little buggers right on out. I'd like to think as balling a melon. Appetizing huh? :)

The first tumor was quite large, and it had formed in an area that was responsible fine motor skills (speech, fingers, walking, talking etc.). Infact, before this whole thing started, I felt stroke like symptoms. It wasn't everyday, but once every so often my right arm would feel a numb like tingling sensation, my fingers on the right hand would go numb; At one point I even felt my the right side of my tounge go numb, etc. It really scared me, I didn't know what was happening. But not to worry, they were just temporary symptoms (just the tumors way of letting me know, "Hey I'm still here and I need to be taken out". :o)

After Affects
Anyway, like I said, the operation itself was no big deal, and I did initially have some issues in areas like speech and fine motor skills; I was concerned as anyone would be. But you have to remember, that most affects are only temporary. And while everyone's different, not everybody will experience the exact same reactions that I had. Those are the effects I had b/c my tumor was in that specific location.

Now my second operation was like a day at the beach. :) No effects, no complications, no nothing. Was out in 2 days.

So there ya have it, that was my experience.

* This is my story. It's not to be meant as advice. I am not a doctor. Every situation's different and you should check with your physician. * ;)
