Everyone has a story to tell, this is mine. The year was 1987. I was 11, and starting the 6th grade. Exploration, independence, cliques, and social graces, were part of my everyday experience. I was a normal teen excited to start off my teenage years with a bang, but unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to go through. I was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor wrapped around my brain stem. My stay in the hospital was for the better part of…

Post Traumatic Growth Syndrome
by Karen Wright (Personal Development Forum)
We've all heard of Post Traumatic Syndrome (PTS) in relation to surviving a horrifying event. Rape victims, wounded soldiers, accident survivors. The symptoms can be as devastating as the events that caused them: loss of memory, depression, uncontrollable fear. Survivors often live in a diminished state of existence - physically and psychologically withdrawing from the world.…

Years ago, while I was finishing my pre-med studies, I developed an acute pain in my abdomen. I reported to the student health center, where they scheduled me for an immediate appendectomy. Hours later, I awoke in severe pain, alone, and worried. Then something quite ordinary happened. A nurse appeared, held my hand, and simply said, "Don't worry, Larry. Everything is going to be just fine." As she stood there, the pain vanished, along with my anxiety. Fear gave way to optimism that I'd make a…

This is my experience with cancer, and although no one can really ever know what I went through, I think this 500 word description is pretty good start.

"Some times, when there's trauma to a certain area, especially the head, all the little neurons run for cover, just like when it rains and we all disperse and look for shelter. But after it stops raining we all come right back. Well, sometimes, it works the same way with all the little neurons in your head, they come back."
About a year ago, I underwent surgery to remove two meningiomas. If you’re not familiar with my story, you can view it…

This past January I was bowling and started experiencing what I thought was a stroke or heart attack. After a couple of games, I simply forgot how to bowl; forgot which foot to start off with and even how to throw it down the lane.
So I just thought I needed a break, but when my food came, I definitely had trouble holding burger in my right hand, and I couldn't hold on to the french fries as they fell to the floor. So at this point I knew something was definitely up. I knew I…

I'm a cancer survivor and I have long-term hearing loss from treatment. I now wear hearing aids, and although they help a lot, it's not like they are a fresh set of 100% fully functional ears. :) So I make due as always with what I have. But damn, it can be awfully frustrating at times.
As long as I'm in a semi-quiet situation, I usually get the gist of conversations, but I'm really at a loss in noisy environments; usually social events. Anybody out there going through the same thing?

Having your child vaccinated should be a choice, say some area anti-inoculation activists and parents. But if you expect to send your infant or preschool-age child to a South Jersey daycare center next month, know this: New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services says come September 1, no shots, no school.

The blockbuster cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin failed to slow age-related hardening of the heart valve that without surgery can lead to heart attack, stroke or death, doctors said Monday.
Vytorin worked no better than a placebo at blocking aortic stenosis, which leads to 95,000 valve replacement operations and 25,000 deaths in the USA each year, says lead investigator Terje Pedersen of Ulleval University…

I recently had 2 meningionma resections. I was taking the growth hormone and had stopped it promtly when these two buggers were discovered. Now, 2 months after my surgery, I'd like to continue with the GH. But I'm concearned that it will speed up the growth process if I have another tumor. Does anybody know or have experince with this?
