Story from a co-worker - I felt nauseous just hearing it

Her son went boating Sat, we'll call him Chris. Before Chris new it, a large boat came by and in it's wake, created a big wave that turned his little boat over and caught Chris in the waves trough. He hit his head forcefully, (enough to require 4 staples) and he was run over by his own boat. At this point, the boat lay upside down. Bleeding pretty profusely I imagine, he made it back to his overturned boat and just lay over the back of the boat until someone came by. 20 minutes later the marine police came and towed his boat to shore and Chris was airlifted to the hospital.
He survived the ordeal at a cost of 4 staples to the back of his head, a fractured vertebrae. 4 rods and 2 screws in his back, which are permanent, and a back brace. They fused together 6 of his vertebrae. Amazingly, he is up and walking and return to work soon.
