Cancer Survivor

I survived a malignant brain tumor in 1987 when I was 11.

I'd been having strong headaches in class that day and went to the school nurse. I remember how I was having trouble keeping my balance in the her office. My mom thought it was an inner ear infection, It wasn't. So that doctor sent me to another and another and soon they were doing cat scans and mri's to figure out what was going on. The people reading the scan said they saw something on the scan that was probably not a big deal, but needed to be removed, and that I should see the surgeon and he'll tell us more.
"Alright, no big deal. So I'll be in for a couple days, and then back to playing hockey with the guys" I said to myself. Boy was I ever wrong.
Sitting in the surgeons office, I had a feeling this was something a bit more serious. Like being in the principal's office; they don't call you in there for nothing. So as he told my mom and I the devistating news, I didn't cry; I wanted to, but just didn't. I just said "Ok, I have it. Now I just need to get rid of it.", and the rest is history.
The hospital stay was for the better part of a year and a half. Falling in and out of conciousness seemed to be my thing, once even stopped breathing on the operating table (ooh the humanity!). The doctors gave me a poor prognosis. They didn't think I'd survive (like most of my friends. God bless their souls). But that's all behind me know.
I had to relearn to walk, first comming back to school in a weelchair, then a walker, then a cane, then ... you know how the story goes. I finished high school, graduated college, went to be accepted to grad school, got a degree in web design, and am now starting my own business (this site!). I am a survivor!
